Tow tractors are materials handling vehicles commonly used to transport pallets of goods in warehouses; they are also used in airports and rail yards for transporting baggage and cargo.
This unit standard teaches the relevant job safety knowledge and practical skills necessary for the safe and efficient operation of tow tractors (and where applicable multi trailer systems), to personnel required to operate these types of machines.

Grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Introduction to tow tractors
We identify the different types of tow tractors and identify the major components.
We show learners the basic operator controls and control panel.
Tow tractor safety precautions
We identify a professional attitude, risk management, the role of the operator, the equipment and the work environment. We identify the necessary personal protective equipment and safety precautions.
Legislation
We discuss the applicable legislation, general safety regulations, accident reporting, housekeeping and safety checklist.
Daily checks and servicing
Walk-around checks and daily service, weekly or 50 hour service, start-up checks, shutdown procedures, refuelling the tipper and the daily checklist
for tippers.
Pre-start checks
We discuss pre-start checks, inspection of new equipment, servicing of new equipment and installation.
Safe operating procedures
We discuss operating controls and indicators, preparation for use, connecting and disconnecting hoses, start-up and shutdown procedures and transporting the tow tractor.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
