This operate a tyre handler attachment course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a tyre handler attachment while performing their daily duties in the working environment.
Learners who achieve the course objectives will, upon completion, be able to demonstrate knowledge of control operations, prescribed operating procedures and safety precautions. In addition, learners will be prepared to take any necessary remedial action in an emergency situation.
Entry requirements
Candidates must have a grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification, and hold a licence to operate the carrier vehicle.

Course content
Tyre handler attachments components and structure
We introduce tyre handler attachments; identify types of tyre handler attachments, principle component and controls, outlining how they fit into the functioning of the machine.
Legal safety issues concerning tyre handlers
We identify hazards and hazard control, outline legal responsibilities in a nutshell, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Construction Regulations of 2003, General Machinery Regulations of 1988, the Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), lockout/tag out procedures and communication requirements.
Preparation and maintenance
We discuss maintenance of lubrication and hydraulic fluid, preventative maintenance, regular inspection, reporting, record-keeping and permit documentation.
Tyre handler operations
We show learners basic safe operating requirements and restrictions, hazard control, power line proximity, pre-use considerations and start-up procedures, tyre handler operations including special equipment requirements, operational procedures, removal of cleat/wedge-mounted rims, removing of flange-mounted rims, records and shutdown procedures.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
