This Break Rock Using a Hydraulic Rock Breaker training course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be required to use a rock breaker during the course of their duties in the working environment.
Upon successful completion of the training programme, learners will be able to demonstrate an understanding of rock-breaking using a hydraulic rock breaker; prepare to break rock using a hydraulic rock breaker; break rock using a hydraulic rock breaker and complete the duties pertaining to the rock-breaking operations.
Entry requirements
Candidates must have a grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification, and hold a licence to operate the carrier vehicle.

Course content
Components and structure of rock breakers
We introduce learners to hydraulic rock-breaking, types of rock breakers, principle component identification and controls.
Rock breaker safety issues
We outline the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), hazard identification and control, monitoring of environmental and health elements, good housekeeping practices, legal responsibilities in a nutshell, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996, the lockout procedure, communication requirements, a rock breaker’s on-board safety systems and safety precautions when operating.
Preparation and maintenance of rock breakers
We show the learners how to prepare the machine for operation, such as lubrication and nitrogen gas (N2) pressure adjustment. We also take learners through inspection, maintenance and storage of the rock breaker when not in use; includes record keeping and reporting.
Rock-breaking operations
Work area examination, pre-use inspection; start-up, machine operations, factors affecting the optimum performance of the rock-breaking process, when to stop operations and shutdown.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
