This course provides knowledge of the safety procedures and equipment required to minimize the identified hazards associated with hot work. Learners will be taught the hazards to be aware of, locational requirements and permit program requirements for conducting hot work projects in non-designated areas.

Course content
Hot work definitions
We explain the terminology, definitions and concepts of hot work; permit authorising individuals (PAI), fire watch, site monitors, designated areas, etc., and how they all pertain to hot work.
Hot work hazards
We identify fire hazards, flying sparks, explosion hazards and physical and health hazards.
Locational requirements
We explain the locational requirements for designated areas and controlled areas, confined space hot work and non-permissible locations.
Hot work permit programme requirements
We discuss exactly what is accomplished by employing the use of a hot work permitting system, a decision flow chart that can be utilized to help determine if a hot work permit is needed or not, analyse the hazards, fuel sources, fire watch requirements, contractor responsibilities, mutual responsibility, individual employee responsibilities, and we look at the company permit. We discuss what happens before hot work operations commence, during hot work operations, special considerations while welding and gas cutting, oxygen and acetylene safety considerations, special considerations while grinding, after hot work operations, and the cancelation of hot work permits.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
