Because a brush cutter is a high-speed, fast-cutting power tool some special safety precautions must be observed in addition to those that generally apply when working with hand tools.
This training programme provides information on the requirements and responsibilities of people using specialised walk-behind mowers and the development and implementation of the highest standards of safety to ensure safe and correct operating.
Entry requirements

Course content
Types of walk-behind mowers
We identify the different types of walk-behind mowers and the correct selection of a mower for its specific application. The basic components are identified and a mechanical appreciation of the machine is conducted.
Safety precautions and legislation regarding brush cutters
We cover legislation (OHS acts and Machine Safety acts); outline the safe working practices, general precautions, PPE choices, accident prevention, reporting of incidents and actions to take when an incident occurs (basic); the function that the stone guards perform is described in terms of the purpose of preventing safety incidents from occurring, as well as safety precautions that must be adhered to while operating electrically-driven walk-behind mowers and good housekeeping in a fuel storage facility.
Maintenance checks and logs
In this module we identify safety and mechanical checks, correct selection and mixing of fuel, blade adjustments, tension of drive chains and belts, and stone guards. We clean, store, and check the machines for defects.
Walk-behind mowing operations
We discuss preparation of the mowing area, discuss and apply the correct procedures and operating techniques for walk-behind mowers, including cutting adjustments, prevention of uncut gaps, evenness of cut, quality of cut, keeping extension cord connections dry, start-up and shutdown procedures.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
