This course introduces operators to the functions and mechanical aspects of the jackhammer, and offers practical advice on controlling hazards, including inspections, personal protective equipment (PPE), preventative maintenance requirements and refuelling precautions.
It also covers general planning of operations, operational instrumentation, operating techniques and manoeuvring, and transportation of the machine to site. This training course is practical hands-on training, tailored to your needs and the equipment you use.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be 18 years and over, holders of a Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Introduction to jackhammers
We look at the history of design and function of jackhammers, how and why they are used, and the importance of safety.
Legislative and regulative requirements for a jackhammer and its operator
We go through the OHS Act and relevant legislation regarding the operation and safety of a jackhammer, along with maintaining the equipment and keeping co-workers safe. The relevant regulations are explained.
Component familiarisation and basic mechanical appreciation
We take a look at the main components and workings of a jackhammer, how they all fit together and how they co-operate to achieve the right output.
Maintenance and inspection of jackhammers
We look at the checks to be done before startup and after shutdown, as well as preventative maintenance and servicing. We then move on to refueling procedures and then maintaining a logbook.
Operational interface of jackhammers
We examine the gauges, warning devices, switches, controls, pedals and other instruments which the operator will be interacting with.
Protection of the self and others
We look at the general principles of safety, the required precautions and personal protective equipment requirements.
Preparations for use
We look at how to plan the work activity and prepare the work area for use.
Using the jackhammer
We take learners through the operating techniques, manoeuvring and the use of attachments with an emphasis on safety and efficiency.
Transporting a jackhammer to site
We go over the transportation and documentation requirements for supplying the work area with a jackhammer.
Professional operator attitude
We promote an attitude among the learners that stresses the importance taking responsibility for safety, communication requirements, punctuality and timeous action, as well as knowledge of company standard operating requirements.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
