Tree stumps often result from felled or fallen trees or even broken branches. This results in unwanted or unsightly stumps that may be undesirable to the land or property owner.
Learners found competent to operate a stump cutting or grinding machine will be able to use the machine to remove tree stumps.
Entry requirements
Grade 7 certificate (basic maths and English literacy) or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Inspect the equipment and operational site
Grinder is checked and serviced. The importance of sharpening blades is explained. The consequences of not tightening up loose parts is explained.
Prepare to use stump grinder on site
Personal Protective Clothing (PPC) is worn as a protective measure. The function and protection offered by each item of the PPC is described. Site is checked for possible power, sewage, telecom lines and other ground utilities. The grinder is prepared for operation. On-site precautionary measures are taken in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Operate stump grinder as per specifications
Grinder is operated safely according to manufacturer instructions, workplace procedures and site conditions.
Conduct activities for post equipment use
Grinder is checked for debris after use. Grinder is checked for loose parts after use. Loose parts are tightened up. Grinder is transported off site. Site condition is in accordance to requirements and as per contractual obligations. Site condition is in accordance to workplace standards, legal and/or sector norms and standards.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
Training programme accreditation
This training programme is aligned to the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing (FP&M) SETA in accordance with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) unit standard 117071: Fell Trees Using a Chainsaw and Machine Assistance.
HRETD certification policy
Provided that the entry requirements have been met, and the learner found competent to operate a stump cutting machine, the candidate will receive a certificate of competence that is valid life-long, and that does not expire.
