The mobilift mechanical handler course is designed for both novice and experienced operators. Upon achieving the objectives of the above unit standard, operators will be permitted to operate a mobilift pick and carry crane in the working environment, having learnt not only the main components, mechanical principles and operating controls, but also operational checks and procedures, lift planning, working and travelling safely with loads, correct rigging and inspection practices, identifying cargo and maintaining the necessary documentation required by the employer.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be 18 years and over, have a Grade 10 certificate or NQF2 equivalent, and appropriate heavy vehicle driver license.

Course content
Getting to know the mobilift (component identification)
Basic mechanical appreciation of mobilift cranes
Legislation
We take learners over the legal responsibilities in a nutshell, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996 and the use of protective clothing.
Safety precautions during mobilift crane operations
We discuss operator physical requirements, pre-operation safety requirements, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), safety precautions during pre-operation checks, while setting up the Mobilift, during operations and refuelling and safety regulations concerning parking and shutdown procedures.
Walk-around and start-up checks, shutdown and refuelling procedures
Principles of leverage, centre of gravity and stability
Load charts, range diagrams and load moment indicators
Setting up the mobilift for a lift, ground conditions, wind proximity hazards
We cover the issues when using a crane over ground conditions, proximity hazards and the effects of wind.
Planning a lift, conditions affecting capacity, power line clearances and procedures after contact
Estimating the size and weight of loads
Safe lifting practice and mobilift cranes
Advantages and disadvantages of using steel-wire ropes, inspections of them, safety precautions when using them on any rigging and slinging tasks; synthetic woven webbing slings, inspections of them; advantages and disadvantages of using chain slings, inspection of them, hand signals and sling angles.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
