This Operate a Roller course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a roller while performing their daily duties in the working environment.
The course encompasses the use of several types of rollers, including vibratory rollers, pneumatic rollers, rubber wheeled rollers and smooth wheeled vibratory rollers.
Learners who achieve the course objectives will, upon completion, be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions of a roller, plan for work activities and prepare the work area, start and shut down the roller and operate and transport the roller to and from the work site.
Entry requirements
Candidates must have a grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Introduction to rollers
We discuss types of rollers and uses for the various types of rollers.
Getting to know the roller
We show learners components of a roller, including the drive train and operators’ compartment, explaining how they fit into the roller’s functions.
Basic mechanical appreciation
Roller safety precautions
We look at safety precautions to be taken when preparing the roller, operating, and shutting down, as well as when maintaining. Operation in dangerous areas and the appropriate safety precautionary measures are also explained in detail.
Daily check, servicing and general upkeep
We do walk-around checks and daily service, weekly or 50 hour service, start-up checks, shutdown procedures, refuelling the roller, daily checklist for rollers.
Controls, levers, pedals and instruments
We look at the controls, gauges, warning lights and warning pictorials.
Operating and transporting the roller
We show learners the operating techniques and precautions, starting the engine, moving off with the machine, shifting gears, steering, working on inclines, at edges of dumps or on stockpiles, falling over the edge of a dump, parking, checking after shutdown, cleaning and transporting the roller.
Legislation and regulations
We take learners over the legal responsibilities in a nutshell, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Mine Health and Safety Act of 1996 and the use of protective clothing.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
