Our roads are increasingly congested and hazardous, making defensive driving skills indispensable for light delivery vehicle operators. HRETD's "Light Delivery Vehicles Defensive Driving" course addresses these challenges head-on, covering vital areas such as load securement, speed management, and emergency handling. Multimedia elements like quizzes and videos enrich the learning experience, making it both comprehensive and engaging.
Stay Ahead of Risks. The course equips participants with the tools to navigate congested roads and erratic driving behaviour safely. Through hands-on training and real-world simulations, drivers will master techniques for hazard identification, safe lane changing, and evasive manoeuvring, enhancing their ability to respond effectively to unforeseen risks.
Drive Safely, Deliver Successfully. This training not only contributes to individual skill development but also bolsters organisational safety metrics, thereby lowering the risk of accidents and subsequent costs.

Course content
Introduction to Defensive Driving
This module introduces the concept of defensive driving and its importance in South
Africa, where road accidents are a significant concern. Participants will learn what
defensive driving means and why it's crucial for road safety. The module also covers
the legal requirements under the National Road Traffic Act and provides an overview
of current road accident statistics in South Africa, aiming to underscore the urgency of
adopting defensive driving techniques.
Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
Understanding vehicle condition is paramount for safe driving. This module instructs
participants on how to perform a comprehensive pre-trip inspection using a checklist.
Topics such as basic vehicle maintenance, tyre care, and fluid checks are also
covered. Proper vehicle maintenance not only prevents breakdowns but also
contributes to road safety.
Driver Condition
The condition of the driver is as critical as the vehicle's state. This module focuses on the negative impacts of driving while fatigued, under the influence of drugs or alcohol,
and distracted driving due to mobile phone usage. It also stresses the importance of
wearing seat belts at all times.
Driving Techniques
This module teaches essential driving techniques such as correct hand positioning on
the steering wheel, efficient use of mirrors, and effective braking techniques.
Participants will learn how to manage blind spots and how to navigate common driving
challenges, which can contribute to a reduced risk of accidents.
Road Awareness
Road awareness is vital for defensive driving. This module delves into the importance
of situational awareness and how to read and understand road signs and signals.
Topics also include the rules for giving way, and safe practices for navigating
roundabouts and intersections.
Adverse Driving Conditions
Driving in adverse conditions presents unique challenges. Participants will learn how to safely operate vehicles in conditions like rain, fog, or night-time. The module covers techniques for skid control and recommends safe following distances based on driving conditions.
Accident Procedures
Even the best defensive drivers can find themselves in an accident. This final module
equips participants with knowledge on the correct procedures for reporting an accident
and completing necessary documentation. It also provides basic first aid guidelines
and best practices for managing the scene post-accident.
Anti-Hijacking and Overcoming Lawlessness
on South African Roads
Introduction to hijacking and lawlessness on South African roads, identifying and
assessing risks, anti-hijacking techniques for heavy vehicle operators, responding to
hijacking and lawlessness incidents, legal and regulatory framework, and cooperation
and collaboration with law enforcement.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
