This training course outlines the specific issues relating to the use of air compressors, including air compressor types and selection, installation, safety with air compressors, safe operating procedures, preventative maintenance and power tool attachments. Troubleshooting and risk assessment are also covered.
A learner will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions of the air compressor and the start-up, shutdown and operating procedures for the machine.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be 18 years and over, holders of a Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Introduction to air compressors
We identify the different types of compressors, the basic components are identified and a mechanical appreciation of the machine is conducted. Basic working principles of the machine are explained.

Compressor safety precautions
We identify a professional attitude, risk management, the role of the operator, the equipment and the work environment. We identify the necessary personal protective equipment and safety precautions.

Pre-start checks and installation
We discuss pre-start checks, inspection of new equipment, servicing of new equipment and installation.
Safe operating procedures
We discuss operating controls and indicators, preparation for use, connecting and disconnecting hoses, start-up and shutdown procedures and transporting the air compressor.
Air compressor power tool attachments
We discuss types of power tool attachments and precautions and procedures for installing attachments.
Air compressor troubleshooting
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
