Learners found competent in this operate a marine loader crane training course will be able to lift and move loads while accounting for the movement of the ship, which is not present on stable ground. In addition to this, the learner will be able to transfer freight to and from other vessels while the ship is still moving.
A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate an integrated practical and theoretical grounding in marine crane operations according to safe handling and maintenance practices in compliance with crane manufacturers and legislated standards.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be 18 years and over, holders of a Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Introduction to marine loader cranes
We first look at the history of design and technology involved. Parts of the marine loader crane are identified and their purpose explained.
Legislated requirements for operating marine loader cranes
We explain the students the legal responsibilities of operating a marine loader crane in a nutshell. Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 Of 1993 and Driven Machinery Regulations, 2015 are explained.
Pre-operational considerations for off-shore lifting
We give learners an introduction to crane operations terminology. We then look at required operator qualifications. Students are familiarised with the specific marine loader crane to be used. Weather and sea conditions that may affect operations are explained. Crane legality status is explained. Pre-operational and start-up inspection of the marine loader crane is carried out.
A checklist example is provided to the students. We take learners through the actions required when finding a fault on a marine loader crane. We then go through other pre-operational considerations.
Off-shore lifting teams
We identify the different personnel involved in offshore crane operations and explain their various roles and responsibilities.
Operational safety
We explain why there are capacity deductions for a marine loader cranes. We show learners how to read and interpret load charts and range diagrams. The area of operation is explained. Additional boom length and height considerations are gone over. We go through general crane operations safety considerations and shutdown procedures.
On-board procedures for off-shore lifting operations
We explain to learners the safety precautions to be taken while lifting, moving and landing a load.
Procedures for off-shore lifting operations involving two vessels
We introduce learners to safely lifting and placing freight from and to a second vessel in different weather conditions.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
