The backhoe/loader (TLB) course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a backhoe/loader while performing their daily duties.
A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions of the backhoe/loader and the start-up, shutdown and operating procedures for the machine.
Entry requirements
Grade 9 certificate or ABET level 4 is required to attend this course and a code B national driver’s license is mandatory, if operating on South African roads in accordance with The National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

Course content
Introduction
We explain what a backhoe/loader is, its functions, list different types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and explain why PPE is so important.
Backhoe/loader components
We identify the different components, the external and internal components of a typical backhoe/loader engine, explain the difference between petrol and diesel engines, and we discuss how the following components function - hydraulic, electrical, braking and cooling systems, power train, tyres, loader and excavator buckets.
Gauges and switches
We explain the different types of gauges and switches.
Backhoe/loader controls
We explain why the operator’s compartment must be kept clean, neat and tidy, the function of the floor pedals, direction control function, steering control and the implementation of control functions.
Backhoe/loader checks
We list and explain why the operator must perform and complete different machine checks and explain how to stop, shut down and park the machine.
General backhoe/loader safety
We explain who is responsible for the operator and machine’s safety and list general and site safety rules.
Backhoe/loader operating techniques
We explain how to perform all the basic backhoe/loader operations safely, list the different operating techniques; explain what the different engine smoke colours indicate, why intermittent revving is not desired and how to start a cold engine.
Transporting the backhoe/loader
We explain how to safely load the backhoe/loader onto a transporter, what aspects to check for while loading and off-loading the backhoe/loader, how to off-load the backhoe/loader from the transporter and how to position and secure the backhoe/loader on the transporter.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
