Remote controlled and ready for action, trench compactors are a unique breed of machinery requiring specialised skills. HRETD's "Operate Trench Compactors" course is designed to provide you with those exact skills, covering topics such as operational controls, maintenance checks, and safety procedures.
Hands-on training sessions allow participants to gain practical experience in trench compactor operations. The focus lies on mastering remote controls, understanding soil types for effective compaction, and maintaining safety protocols to mitigate on-site risks. Real-world scenarios are employed to ensure that you are adept at using trench compactors in a range of work environments.
Upon successful completion of the course, a CETA-accredited certification will be issued, attesting to your proficiency in operating trench compactors. This makes you a valuable asset for any construction or utility project that involves trench work, elevating both your skill set and the overall safety standards of the operation.

Course content
Introduction trench compactors
We look at the history of design and function of trench compactors, how and
why they are used, and the importance of safety
Legislative and regulative requirements for a compactor and its operator
We go through the OHS Act and relevant legislation regarding the operation
and safety of a trench compactor, along with maintaining the equipment and
keeping co-workers safe. The relevant regulations are explained.
Component familiarisation and basic mechanical appreciation
We take a look at the main components and workings of a compactor, how
they all fit together and how they co-operate to achieve the right output.
Maintenance and inspection of compactors
We look at the checks to be done before startup and after shutdown, as well as
preventative maintenance and servicing. We then move on to refueling
procedures and then maintaining a logbook.
Operational interface of trench compactors
We examine the gauges, warning devices, switches, controls, pedals and other
instruments which the operator will be interacting with.
Protection of the self and others
We look at the general principles of safety, the required precautions and
personal protective equipment requirements.
Preparations for use
We look at how to plan the work activity and prepare the work area for use
Using the trench compactor
We take learners through the operating techniques, manoeuvring and the use
of attachments with an emphasis on safety and efficiency.
Transporting a trench compactor to site
We go over the transportation and documentation requirements for supplying
the work area with a trench compactor.
Professional operator attitude
We promote an attitude among the learners that stresses the importance
taking responsibility for safety, communication requirements, punctuality and
timeous action, as well as knowledge of company standard operating
requirements.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
