The MEWP course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a Mobile Elevating Work Platform while performing their daily duties.
A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions of the MEWP and the start-up, shutdown and operating procedures for the machine.
Entry requirements
Candidates must be 18 years and over, holders of a Grade 10 certificate or equivalent qualification.
For any queries regarding the requirements and conditions of MEWP training, contact our skills development advisor for more information.

Course content
Getting to know the MEWP
We discuss types of MEWPs, component identification and proportional controls and features.
Basic mechanical appreciation
Legislation (Extracts from the OHS Act)
MEWP safety precautions
We outline the physical requirements for MEWP operators, as well as pre-operational, operational and parking/shutdown safety requirements and precautions, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while setting up the MEWP and refuelling of the truck/MEWP carrier.
Walk-around checks, start-up checks, shutdown and refueling procedures
Principles of leverage, centre of gravity and stability
Capacity charts and range diagrams
We take learners through the use of load charts, basic information obtained from charts and diagrams, definitions, range diagrams and safe operating areas.
Setting up the MEWP
We discuss proximity hazards, ground-bearing surface, outrigger blocking, procedures, precautions and considerations when operating in windy conditions.
Planning operations, conditions affecting stability, power line clearances and procedures after contact
We take learners through planning operations, factors affecting stability, working near power lines with a MEWP, contact between MEWP and power lines, communications between operator and the Banksman and the Beaufort wind scale.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
