The mobile crane course is designed for both novice and experienced operators. Learners who meet the specific outcomes and assessment criteria will be permitted to operate a mobile crane of the following codes:
Code C33: Hydraulic mobile crane up to a rated capacity of 50 Tons
Code C34: Hydraulic pick up & carry crane up to a rated capacity of 50 Tons
Code C37: Lattice boom mobile truck crane up to a rated capacity of 50 Tons
Code C38: Lattice boom mobile crawler crane up to a rated capacity of 50 Tons
Entry requirements
Candidates must be 18 years and over, have a Grade 10 certificate or NQF2 equivalent, and appropriate heavy vehicle driver's license.

Course content
Demonstrate knowledge of the functions of a mobile crane
We look at major components and systems, lattice booms, driver’s controls, crane controls and operating console, and how they all fit into the functioning of different types of mobile cranes.
Legal requirements
We summarise the legal responsibilities, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Driven Machinery Regulations, 1988, Construction Regulations, 2003, Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996, Lifting Equipment Regulations, General Machinery Regulations and use of personal protective clothing.
Identify the safety and suitability of a crane and its lifting tackle
We go through definitions of common terms, such as capacity ratings, rubber ratings, quadrants, standing and support conditions, etc., as well as thoroughly explaining the effects of wind, capacity deductions, centre of gravity, load balancing, sling angles, load weight, sling angle losses, and handling and inspection of various lifting tackle.
Operate a mobile crane
We show the learners safe hand signals, using load charts, safe handling, on-rubber lifting, pick up and carry operations, boom angle indicators and critical lifts, lifting and handling loads, conduct of operators and safety principles.
Inspection of mobile cranes
Pre-operational inspection and close-down checks.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
