This training course instructs learners on the identification of hazards and minimum entry requirements of working in confined spaces, the correct use of PPE and atmospheric monitoring equipment, training requirements, planning and implementing of emergency evacuations and alignment with legislative rudiments on construction sites and in industry.
Entry requirements
Grade 7 certificate (basic maths and English literacy) or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Introduction to confined spaces
We explain what a confined space is, why people enter confined spaces and examples of a confined space
Hazards of confined spaces
We discuss hazard assessment, why confined spaces are hazardous, unsafe oxygen level, flammable and explosive atmospheres, ignition sources, substances hazardous to health and their sources, how we might be exposed to these substances, and exposure standards for hazardous substances, engulfment, electrical hazards, and other hazards.
Risk assessment for confined spaces
Control measures for confined spaces
We discuss elimination, substitution, isolation and engineering, atmospheric testing, written authority, stand-by person, hot work, emergency response, training and competence, record keeping, personal protective equipment (PPE), signs and barriers, common warning signs of an unsafe atmosphere and rescue equipment/retrieval systems.
Permit-required and non-permit required confined spaces
We identify types of confined spaces, permit-required confined spaces non-permit-required confined spaces, preparations prior to entry into a permit space “reclassified” as a non-permit space and tasks to be performed on completion of confined space operations.
Duties of the designated employees
We discuss training, entry supervisor, authorised entrant, attendants and contractor compliance.
Confined space rescue
We talk about confined space rescue, rescue categories, equipment and training.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
