The first aid level 2 training course expands on the level 1 unit standard, enabling learners to provide more advanced primary emergency care to a more specific range of patients, be it co-workers in their respective workplaces or civilians.
Qualifying learners will be able to demonstrate the principles of primary emergency care, assess and control a single injury emergency scene in the workplace, demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children and infants, explain and manage shock, carry out a secondary assessment of the injured and provide appropriate primary emergency care at the scene and keep records of the incident/accident.
Entry requirements
Grade 10 certificate (full maths and English literacy) or equivalent qualification. It is highly recommended that learners are credited with First Aid Level 1.

Course content
Demonstrate the principles of primary emergency care in the workplace
This module focuses on primary emergency care in terms of prevention of further injury and/or infection, life preservation, recovery and the promotion of healthier lifestyles. We go through Personal Protective Equipment and Devices, as well as the medico-legal implications of primary emergency care.
Sustain a basic level of preparedness for health emergencies in the workplace
We demonstrate the use of the first aid kit in accordance with the current legislation, as well as the maintenance and storage of the relevant risk-based primary emergency care kit in accordance with accepted workplace procedures.
Assess and manage an emergency scene in the workplace
This module takes learners through emergency scene assessment and management; alerting medical authority, safeguarding and stabilising the casualty, providing primary care for priority injuries using a first aid kit or readily-available substitutes in lieu thereof, and carrying out thorough secondary assessment of the casualty.
Demonstrate primary emergency life support for adults, children and infants
This module covers tracheal (windpipe) obstruction, control of bleeding by application of direct pressure to the wound site, utilisation of the recovery position as well as demonstrating CPR for patients of varying ages, from infants to adults.
Explain and manage shock
We identify, explain and symptomatically manage shock and anaphylaxis according to accepted protocols.
Conduct secondary assessment of the sick and/or injured person and provide appropriate primary medical care within the workplace
This module goes over immobilisation of dislocations, fractures or sprains, transport of persons with vertebral injuries, management of head trauma, recognising various levels of consciousness, management of open wounds, burns, thermal stress, toxins and common illnesses.
Keep records of the incident/accident
This module goes over assessment of the patient’s condition (illness and/or injury), recording it and reporting it to medical personnel or other authority upon arrival. Also looks at incident/accident reporting in accordance with accepted workplace policies and procedures.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
