This training course is aimed at a traffic guard, traffic controller, flagman, or flagger who directs traffic through a construction site or other temporary traffic control zone past an area using gestures, signs or flags.
Learners found competent will be able to select and set up temporary road signs and barriers at road works to ensure the safety of pedestrians, motorists and workers, when any work has to be done in a road or next to a road on the pavement.

Grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification.

We discuss when flaggers are needed, working for a contractor, how the crew is organized, basic responsibilities, protecting yourself and your co-workers, protecting the public, guiding traffic efficiently and using your skills and intelligence.
People and signs
We explain who the people are who can help, signs you should know about - regulatory signs, warning signs and guide signs.

Your job duties
We discuss how you should act on the job, emergency vehicles, your flagging station, where to stand, curves and flagging at night.
How to flag
We talk about flagging to control traffic both during the day and at night. We discuss the use of flags to stop traffic, or to release or slow traffic and flagging in night time emergency situations in a non-illuminated flagger station.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
