The scraper course is designed for both novice and experienced operators who may be expected to operate a scraper while performing their daily duties.
A learner accredited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the functions of the scraper and the start-up, shutdown and operating procedures for the machine.
Entry requirements
Candidates must have a grade 7 certificate or equivalent qualification.

Course content
Introduction
We explain what a scraper is, list a few different makes of scrapers, explain the scraper’s functions, list different types of PPE and explain why PPE is so important.
Scraper components and structure
We identify the different components found on a scraper, the external and internal components of a typical scraper engine, explain the difference between petrol and diesel engines and we discuss how the following components function - hydraulic, electrical, cooling and braking systems, power train and tyres.
Gauges and warning devices
We explain the different types of gauges, warning devices, the different warning levels found on electronic and computer monitoring systems and identify the different symbols found thereupon.
Scraper controls
We explain why the operator’s compartment must be kept clean, neat and tidy, the function of the floor pedals, direction control function, steering control and the implementation of control functions.
Scraper checks
We list and explain why the operator must perform and complete different machine checks and explain how to stop, shut down and park the machine.
General scraper safety
We explain who is responsible for the operator and machine’s safety and list general and site safety rules.
Scraper operating techniques
We explain how to perform all the basic scraper operations safely, list the different operating techniques; explain what the different engine smoke colours indicate, why intermittent revving is not desired and how to start a cold engine.
Transporting the scraper
We explain how to safely load the scraper onto a transporter, what aspects to check for while loading and off-loading the scraper, how to off-load the scraper from the transporter and how to position and secure the scraper on the transporter.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
