Course content
Demonstrate knowledge of technology to compact material
The technology of using a small self-propelled compactor is explained and
demonstrated. The importance of optimum moisture content is explained. The
concept of density is explained. The concept of testing density by sand
replacement and hydro-density meter is explained.
Plan work activity
Job instructions are interpreted correctly and a sequence of operations is
determined. All tools and attachments required for the work activity are
selected and checked to be functional and ready for use. The purpose of
selecting specific tools and attachments is explained. Alternative or
complementary equipment is identified. Appropriate pre-operational machine
checklist is acquired. The purpose of checklists is explained. All Personal
Protective Equipment required for the work activity is selected and checked to
be adequate for the task. The importance of checking Personal Protective
Equipment is explained. Affected parties are informed and liaised with. The
consequences of not liaising with the appropriate parties are explained.
Plan work activity
Work area is inspected and prepared. Reasons for inspections and preparation
are defined. Procedures to be followed to ensure the safety of the work area
are described. The consequences of not correctly using Personal Protective
Equipment are explained.
Compact material
Machine is moved to required work area. Machine is positioned for specific
operation. Consequences of incorrectly positioning machine are explained.
Activities are performed according to manufacturer's operating procedures and
job requirements in order to maximise the life span of components.
Consequences of not following correct sequences are explained. Unexpected
circumstances are dealt with. Safe working procedures are followed.
Consequences of unsafe acts are explained.
Assessment methods
We conduct a formative theoretical assessment at the beginning of the course to gauge the learner’s initial understanding (novices only). At the end of the training, a summative theoretical and practical application assessment is conducted, to find if the learner is competent; if not, additional developmental areas are identified and suggested.
