UNIT STANDARD: 119697 [SAQA]
NQF LEVEL: 01 (3 credits)
DESCRIPTION: This training programme provides information on the requirements and responsibilities of people using a ride-on lawn mower and the development and implementation of the highest standards of safety to ensure safe and correct operating. A person credited with this unit standard will be able to identify the various types of mowers and their specific functions, operate walk-behind mowers safely, mow lawn areas to industry standards, conduct preventative maintenance checks on mowers and apply knowledge of mowing in landscape maintenance.
DURATION: Full Training (Novice): 3 Days
Recertification Training/Evaluation: 1 Day
COURSE CONTENT: Types of mowers described (including industrial ride-on
    rotary mowers)
We identify the different types of mowers and the     correct selection of a mower for its specific application.     The basic components are identified and a mechanical     appreciation of the machine is conducted.
Safety precautions and legislation
We cover legislation (OHS acts and Machine Safety     acts); we outline the safe working practices, general     precautions, PPE choices, and the correct use of stone     guards, accident prevention, reporting of incidents and     actions to take when an incident occurs (basic).
Industry lawn mowing standards
Height of cut adjustment over-seeded and shade lawns,     vigorous, stolon and rhizome lawns, overlapping cuts,     single cut, double cut, and grass-boxing.
Maintenance checks and logs

We check for defects     (chassis, fuel leaks, blade attachment, wheels, handles,     on-off switch, guards, cable wear, and plug     connections), cleaning of the machine, and storage.
Mowing operations
We discuss preparation of the mowing area, Discuss     and apply the correct procedures and operating     techniques for mowing, including cutting adjustments,     left- and right-hand turns, preventing twists and kinks     in cables, keep extension cord connections dry,
