COURSE CONTENT: Rough terrain lift trucks described
We take learners through principal component     identification, basic mechanical appreciation, cooling     system, engine lubrication system, exhaust emission,     fuel system, electrical system, hydraulic system, brake     system, transmission and torque convertor, steering     system, differential, electric motors and instruments     and controls on a RTLT.
Legal safety issues
We outline legal responsibilities in a nutshell,     Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Driven     Machinery Regulations, 1988, Construction Regulations,     2003, Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996, Lifting     Equipment Regulations, General Machinery Regulations,     Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), hazard     identification and hazard control, the lockout procedure     and communication requirements.
Centre of gravity and stability
We talk about finding the centre of gravity, principle of     balance and the RTLT, load centre, centre of gravity and     the RTLT, causes of stability failure, lateral stability and     the RTLT and attachments.
Estimating the size and weight of loads
We describe to learners estimating size, estimating     weight and the weight of common materials.
Walk-around checks, start-up checks, shutdown
     procedures, refuelling procedures and logbooks

Manoeuvring and operating techniques
We look at safe operating procedures, travelling,     stacking and un-stacking with a RTLT fitted with a mast     and forks, how to pick up a load at low or ground level,     how to remove a load from a stack or rack at height,     how to place a load on a stack or rack at height,     handling loads with a RTLT and towing.
Handling cargo/loads
We cover hazardous cargos, pictorial marking on cargo,     loading and off-loading of trucks/ trailers, pallets,     racking, interlocking stacks and nesting devices and     pallet feet.
