FULL TITLE: BANKSMAN
UNIT STANDARD: Not unit standard-aligned
DESCRIPTION: The Banksman course is designed for both novice and experienced Banksmen/Signalmen. Learners who meet the assessment criteria will be permitted to conduct Banksman activities within the working environment, having been familiarised with communication methods, the legislated apportioning of responsibilities, safe lifting practices and lift planning. Learners will be able to correctly guide the crane operator through an obstacle course by demonstrating the correct hand and/or radio signals, as well as identifying, selecting and safely securing slings to a load.
DURATION: Full Training (Novice): 2 Days
Remedial Training: 1 Day
COURSE CONTENT: Legislation
    We take learners over the legal responsibilities in a     nutshell, Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of     1993,Driven Machinery Regulations of 1988, Mine     Health andSafety Act of 1996, general machinery     regulations andhazard warning signals.
Safety Precautions
Banksman code of practice and signals
    Hand signals for tower crane, mobile crane, overhead     crane and truck mounted crane operations.
Planning for a Lift
Safe Lifting Practice
    Advantages and disadvantages of using steel-wire     ropes, inspections on steel-wire ropes, safety     precautions when using a steel-wire rope on any rigging     and slinging task, synthetic woven webbing slings,     inspections on synthetic webbing slings, advantages     and disadvantages of using chain slings, inspections on     chain slings, hand signals and sling angles.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The company and learners must meet the conditions of the training requirements before theory training can be given.

Approved by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), the course is designed to provide the learner with awareness, knowledge and the necessary skills to arrest falls from height with the proper use of fall protection products, this course includes visual presentations to ensure safety on the job site.
