NQF LEVEL: 02 (20 credits)
DESCRIPTION: The mobile crane course is designed for both novice and experienced operators. Learners who meet the specific outcomes and assessment criteria will be permitted to operate a mobile crane of the following codes:
Code C33: Hydraulic mobile crane up to 50 Tons
Code C34: Hydraulic pick up & carry crane up to 50 Tons
Code C37: Lattice boom mobile truck crane up to 50 Tons
Code C38: Lattice boom mobile crawler crane up to 50 Ton
Code C43: Mobilift up to a rated capacity of 15 Tons
DURATION: Full Training (Novice): 5 Days
Recertification Training/Evaluation: 1 Day
Upgrade to a higher Rated Capacity: 2 Days
COURSE CONTENT: Demonstrate knowledge of the functions of a mobile     crane
    We look at types of mobile cranes, major components,     lattice boom cranes, driver’s controls, crane controls and     operating console.
Legal requirements
    We cover the legal responsibilities in a nutshell,
    Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, Driven     Machinery Regulations, 1988, Construction Regulations,     2003, Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996, Lifting     Equipment Regulations, General Machinery Regulations     and use of protective clothing.
Identify the safety and suitability of a crane and its     lifting tackle
    We go through definition of common terms, capacity     ratings, rubber ratings, quadrants, standing and support     conditions, effects of wind, capacity deductions, centre     of gravity, balancing the load, sling angles, weight of     load, sling angle losses, chain slings, handling wire     rope, inspecting wire ropes and slings and inspecting     shackles.
Operate a mobile crane
    We show the learners safe hand signals, using load     charts, safe handling, on-rubber lifting, pick up and     carry operations, boom angle indicators and critical lifts,     lifting and handling loads, conduct of operators, safety     principles, pre-operational inspection and close-down     checks.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The company and learners must meet the conditions of the training requirements before theory training can be given, as well as the following:

Heavy Vehicle National Driver’s License assumed to be     in place.
