FULL TITLE: PERFORM BASIC LIFE SUPPORT AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES (FIRST AID LEVEL 1)

NQF LEVEL: 01 (5 credits)
DESCRIPTION: This first aid level 1 course is for persons required to assess an emergency situation and provide basic life support and first aid in order to stabilise patients prior to transfer to the emergency services. Learners credited with this unit standard will be able to demonstrate an understanding of emergency scene management and elements of anatomy and physiology, assess an emergency situation, apply first aid procedures to life-threatening situations and treat common injuries.
DURATION: Full Training (Novice): 2 Days
Recertification Training/Evaluation: 1 Day
COURSE CONTENT: Emergency scene management
    We take learners through maintaining personal safety     in terms of preventing injuries to self and infectious     diseases, safeguarding the emergency scene according     to relevant practices and legislation, safeguarding the     injured person according to relevant practices and     legislation and the implications of rendering first aid in     terms of the relevant medical legislation.
Elementary anatomy and physiology
    This module deals with the respiratory, circulatory,     digestive, nervous and musculoskeletal systems. The     systems of the human body are described in terms of     their structure and function and the manner in which the     systems relate to each other in accordance with basic     medical science.
Assessing an emergency situation
    We show learners how to assess an emergency situation     in terms of priority treatments, how to identify the cause     of an emergency by the main contributing factors, how     to identify the type of injury in terms of broad     classifications and how to assess the type of assistance     required.
Apply first aid in a life-threatening situation
    We show learners how to ensure that the first aid     treatment applied is appropriate to the situation and     how to prevent complications, how to improvise     equipment that is not readily available in order to     perform the procedure required, how to take universal     precautions to prevent infection, how to apply first aid in     accordance with current practices, how to perform     cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and artificial     respiration (AR) in accordance with accepted procedures     and how to refer to medical assistance in accordance     with the specific needs of the casualty.
Treat common injuries
    This module identifies and describes the different types     of injuries and conditions according to their severity,     cause and possible treatment, universal precautions to     take in terms of preventing infection and providing     follow-up care in accordance with the specific needs of     the casualty.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The company and learners must meet the conditions of the training requirements before theory training can be given, as well as the following:

Grade 9 qualification assumed to be in place.

Approved by the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority (HWSETA), the course is designed to provide the learner with awareness, knowledge and the necessary skills to arrest falls from height with the proper use of fall protection products, this course includes visual presentations to ensure safety on the job site.
