FULL TITLE: CONVEY DANGEROUS GOODS BY ROAD
FIELD: Services
SUBFIELD: Transport, Operations and Logistics

NQF LEVEL: 03 (4 credits)
DESCRIPTION: This training programme provides information on the requirements and responsibilities of people wishing to transport dangerous goods on South African roads, and the development and implementation of the highest standards to ensure the safety of transporters and
other road users. Our training is designed to assists employers to comply with the training requirements of the National Road Traffic Act regulation 8: Transportation of dangerous goods and substances by road. Participants are instructed with respect to the requirements of the legislation for receiving, handling and transporting of dangerous goods.
DURATION: Full Training (Novice): 2 Days
Recertification Training: 1 Day
COURSE CONTENT: Introduction to conveying dangerous goods
    We discuss terminology, definitions and legislation.
Dangerous goods classification, exempt quantities     and compatibility
    Here we outline dangerous goods classifications,     exempt quantities, exemptions, multi-loads, provisions     applicable to transportation of classes of hazardous     materials and segregation of dangerous goods.
Placards and documentation
    We take the learners through placard systems,     documentation and required permits.
Emergency response procedures and personal
    protective equipment
    We focus on personal protective clothing, emergency     response procedures, safety measures at the scene of     an incident and examples of dangerous goods incident     reports (SABS 0232-3).
Driver’s duties, documentation and behaviour
    The driver, professional attitude in the work place, pre     trip inspections, roadworthy and inspection requirements     for the vehicle and behaviour en route.
Loading and off-loading dangerous goods
    We cover loading operations, the off-loading operation     and other aspects that need to be considered.
Vehicle stability and load distribution
    We detail centre of gravity and forces and load     distribution.
Fire fighting
    We discuss classification of fires and extinguishing     methods, action to take in case of fire and attacking     a fire.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The company and learners must meet the conditions of the training requirements before theory training can be given, as well as the following:

Heavy Vehicle National Driver’s License assumed to be     in place.
